How to Fix an Overheating PC
Overheating can make a PC noisy, unstable, slow, and in some cases unusable. This page focuses on the safe checks most people can do first before assuming a major hardware failure.

This video focuses on reapplying thermal paste, which is one of the most common fixes for overheating desktops and laptops. The rest of the page still covers the broader overheating checklist: airflow, dust, fans, and temperature monitoring.
Basic steps
- Check whether all case fans and the CPU cooler fan are spinning normally when the system is under load.
- Inspect the inside of the case for dust buildup on filters, cooler fins, and fan blades.
- Make sure front intake and rear exhaust airflow are not blocked by clutter or poor cable routing.
- Verify the CPU cooler is mounted correctly and that the fan or pump is connected to the right header.
- Monitor temperatures so you can tell whether the heat is idle-related, load-related, or immediate after boot.
- If the system was recently built or serviced, revisit thermal paste and cooler mounting before blaming the CPU.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Running a system with a loose cooler can overheat it quickly.
- Dust can create a temperature problem even when every fan still spins.
- If the PC shuts off under load, power delivery issues can look similar to heat problems.
When DIY stops being worth it
There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
