How to Test a Computer Power Supply

A power supply problem can show up as no power, random restarts, failed boot attempts, coil noise, or instability under load. The trick is to start with safe external checks and only move deeper if you are comfortable with the hardware.

Basic steps

  1. Start with the simple checks: wall power, surge protector, PSU switch position, and both ends of the power cable.
  2. Look for obvious signs like burning smell, fan failure, unusual clicking, or restart issues under load.
  3. Reseat the 24-pin motherboard cable and CPU power cable if you are already opening the case.
  4. If you have a tester or known-good spare unit, compare behavior instead of assuming the motherboard is dead.
  5. Check whether the system only fails when the GPU is installed or under heavy usage, which can point toward power limits.
  6. Replace suspect power supplies with a reputable unit rather than gambling on a questionable one.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not open the power supply housing itself. That is not a beginner DIY job.
  • A failing PSU can mimic motherboard, GPU, and RAM problems.
  • Cheap replacement units can create the same problem all over again.

When DIY stops being worth it

There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
