How to Install a Graphics Card (GPU)

A graphics card upgrade can boost gaming performance, creative workloads, and multi-monitor support. The key is to work slowly, seat the card fully, and confirm your power supply and cables are ready for the upgrade.

This video is a step-by-step graphics card installation walkthrough. The page copy now stays neutral about the channel so it matches the video on the page more honestly.

Basic steps

  1. Confirm your power supply has enough wattage and the correct PCIe power connectors for the new card.
  2. Shut the PC down fully, switch off the power supply, unplug it, and touch the metal case to reduce static risk.
  3. Remove the side panel and take out the PCI slot covers that line up with the graphics card.
  4. Insert the card into the top full-length PCIe slot until it clicks into place.
  5. Secure the bracket with screws and connect any required PCIe power cables.
  6. Move your monitor cable to the new GPU, boot up, and install the latest graphics drivers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • No display after install often happens because the monitor is still plugged into the motherboard instead of the graphics card.
  • A card that looks installed but is not fully seated can cause black screen or boot failure symptoms.
  • If the power supply is too weak or missing the proper connectors, the PC may crash under load or refuse to start.

When DIY stops being worth it

There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
