PC Turns On But No Display

If the fans spin and lights come on but nothing appears on the monitor, the problem could be as simple as the wrong display input or as serious as failing hardware.

This walkthrough gives a practical starting point before you assume the motherboard or GPU is dead.

Basic steps

  1. Confirm the monitor is on, set to the correct input, and the cable is fully seated.
  2. Try a different cable and, if possible, a different monitor.
  3. If you have a graphics card installed, make sure the cable is plugged into the graphics card and not the motherboard output.
  4. Power down and reseat the RAM, then test one stick at a time.
  5. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and drives, then try a minimal boot.
  6. Listen for beep codes or watch for motherboard debug LEDs if your system has them.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A no-display problem does not always mean the graphics card failed.
  • Recently changed parts, BIOS settings, or RAM timing changes are common causes.
  • If the computer contains critical files, avoid repeated risky tests once you suspect hardware failure.

When DIY stops being worth it

There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
