How to Apply Thermal Paste

Thermal paste helps your CPU transfer heat into the cooler. Applying it is not usually hard, but sloppy prep, uneven mounting pressure, and rushing the job can create worse temperatures instead of better ones.

Basic steps

  1. Shut the system down, unplug it, and remove the cooler carefully so you do not twist the CPU out with it.
  2. Clean the old paste from the cooler and CPU heat spreader with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free material.
  3. Apply a small amount of new thermal paste to the center of the CPU using the amount recommended for your platform.
  4. Reinstall the cooler with even pressure and tighten screws in a balanced pattern.
  5. Reconnect the CPU fan or pump header before closing the case.
  6. Boot up and monitor temperatures to confirm the cooler is mounted correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Too much paste creates mess and makes cleanup worse, though the cooler mounting matters more than people think.
  • Forgetting the fan or pump cable can cause fast overheating after the first boot.
  • If temperatures stay bad after the repaste, the real problem may be dust, fan failure, or poor case airflow.

When DIY stops being worth it

There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
