How to Replace a Laptop Battery

Laptop battery replacement can be straightforward on some models and frustrating on others. The safe part is identifying the exact laptop model, shutting it down correctly, and disconnecting internal power before doing anything else.

This embedded video is now a hands-on internal laptop battery replacement tutorial instead of a product-focused battery sales video.

Basic steps

  1. Look up your exact laptop model so you can confirm the correct replacement battery before opening anything.
  2. Shut the laptop down, unplug the charger, and if possible let the battery run down a bit before service.
  3. Remove the bottom cover screws in an organized pattern so they go back in the right places.
  4. Disconnect the internal battery cable before touching other components.
  5. Swap the battery carefully, reconnect it, and inspect the cable routing before closing the laptop back up.
  6. Power on the laptop and verify charging behavior inside Windows after reassembly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Prying too aggressively can break clips, damage the bottom cover, or slip into the battery pack.
  • Installing the wrong battery model can create charging issues or physical fit problems.
  • If the battery is swollen, stop and handle the job more carefully than a normal replacement.

When DIY stops being worth it

There is nothing wrong with doing the safe part yourself and then handing the rest off once the job becomes stressful, time-consuming, or risky. That is especially true when the computer has important files, expensive parts, or symptoms that do not match a simple upgrade.
